Oprah Winfrey: Jay Z and Harry Belafonte Are Both Right
The rift between Jay Z and Harry Belafonte could be put to rest if Oprah Winfrey gets involved. As a friend to both men, Winfrey believes each has reason to disagree with the other.
While promoting her role in Lee Daniels' The Butler, the media mogul weighed in on their beef, and when asked, pondered settling their discrepancy on television. "Oh, wouldn't that be a great show? That's an Oprah's Next Chapter," Winfrey told the Urban Daily.
Belafonte voiced his issue with Jay and Beyoncé, accusing the power couple of not using their celebrity to help the Black community. The critique prompted a response from the rap mogul, who felt "offended" by the comment.
Winfrey understands everyone's perspective. "Both are right," she continued. "For Harry Belafonte's day and his way of operating in the world and what was necessary in the marches and protests, and his way of warring and protesting. His warrior, that was necessary for that time. Jay Z, does this through his music, his work and his art. Also necessary. Both are right."
For his part, Belafonte extended an olive branch inviting the Brooklyn MC to a face-to-face meeting. Jay never responded.
