Bill Cosby and Other Celebs React to Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Death
The entertainment world is reeling after the sudden death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner at the age of 54.
When asked what he wants people to remember about Warner, Bill Cosby — who played his on-screen father for years — spoke with CBS News about the actor’s legacy. “He was always a great studier, and I enjoyed working with him very much,” Cosby said. “He was very professional. He always knew his part... He always knew his lines, and he always knew where to go.”
Born August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, Warner was raised by his mother Pamela, who eventually became his manager. Named after Malcolm X and jazz legend Ahmad Jamal, he was a child actor with big dreams and serious chops. After breaking out as Theo on "The Cosby Show", he went on to carve out a respected career across TV, music, and theater — with memorable roles on "Malcolm & Eddie" and "The Resident.”
Now, his former co-stars and longtime friends are sharing what he meant to them.
“Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner,” wrote "Resident" castmate Morris Chestnut on Instagram. “He brought so much depth, warmth, and wisdom to every scene... One of the nicest in the business. Rest easy, brother.”
Tracee Ellis Ross, who starred opposite him in BET’s "Reed Between the Lines,” posted a carousel of memories. “My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant.”
Niecy Nash reflected on their last exchange. “You were giving me my flowers... We talked about how happy we both were in our marriages. Damn friend 🥲 You were a cornerstone of "The Cosby Show". Never to be forgotten.”
Viola Davis, Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Vivica A. Fox — all echoed the same sentiment: this loss hurts deeply. Davis put it simply: “We will speak your name — always.” Rest in heaven. Your love and legacy will never be forgotten.
