O.J. Simpson’s Estate Agrees to Pay Ron Goldman's Father Nearly $58M

In a landmark move, the agreement marks new progress in the decades-long battle over unpaid civil damages.

O.J. Simpson's estate has agreed to pay nearly $58 million to the father of Ron Goldman, adding yet another major chapter in one of the country’s most infamous and seemingly endless legal battles.

Multiple outlets have reported that the estate's executor, Malcolm LaVergne, accepted a creditor claim from Fred Goldman, Ron’s father, totaling $57,997,858.12.

In 2024, Fred originally filed a $117 million claim that accounted for growing interest on the unpaid agreement. Though this amount was incorrect.

The current amount reflects the original civil judgment plus nearly three decades of accumulated interest after Simpson’s acquittal in the criminal trial but liability in the subsequent civil suit.

It's worth noting that the estimated value of Simpson’s estate is currently between $500,000 and $1 million. Michaelle Rafferty, the attorney for the Goldman family, said LaVergne's acceptance of the claim was, if anything, symbolic.

"The Executor’s acceptance of the claim is a positive acknowledgement of the debt. It does not constitute payment," said Rafferty in a statement to PEOPLE. "This acceptance allows the administration of the claim to move forward in probate. We will continue to monitor the probate process as it progresses."

The estate intends to raise the money through the sale of Simpson’s assets, though there are questions about the total value that will actually be realized. Other claimants, including the IRS and the state of California, have asserted stakes; however, Fred’s claim is expected to have priority.

Simpson, a former NFL star, was acquitted in 1995 of the 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.

However, in 1997, a civil jury found him liable for wrongful death and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages to the families of the victims. Most of this judgment went unpaid before Simpson’s death from cancer in April 2024 at age 76.

The next court date in the probate case is scheduled for January.
