‘My Brother’s Keeper For Life’: Anthony Joshua Speaks Out on Tragic Nigeria Crash

The 36-year-old thanked fans, mourned his two deceased friends, and vowed to help carry on their legacies.

Anthony Joshua spoke publicly on Thursday about the Dec. 29 car crash near Lagos, Nigeria, that killed two members of his inner circle, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele

In an emotional video on social media, captioned:

“A short message from the heart. My brother's keeper for life. 🖤🪖🖤

I also want to take a moment to show a massive amount of appreciation to the first responders, to everyone who rushed to help Latz and Sina, to those who helped me get to the hospital, and to all the locals who prayed for us at the scene.

To the doctors and nurses at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi, including Dr. Ogunyankin, Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, and Dr. Ninalowo, thank you for your care.

My appreciation also goes to the British Deputy High Commissioner and Deputy Head of Mission, Simon Field. I would also like to give a massive thank you as well to Uncle Femi Otedola and Alhaji Aliko Dangote for all their logistical support. Without you guys, the transition back to the UK wouldn’t have been as smooth. You truly went above and beyond.

I’d also like to acknowledge Senator Daisy Danjuma, the Honourable Commissioners for Health in Ogun and Lagos States, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun and the Commissioners of Police in Ogun and Lagos States thank you both a million times. To the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, thank you so much for your personal involvement, daily follow ups and all your efforts. And to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, thank you for commissioning your team to step in and help. It means a lot.

Finally, thank you to Cecil Hammond and to everyone who played a part. Your efforts, kindness, and support will never be forgotten.

God bless 🙏🏾”

The 36-year-old former two-time world heavyweight champion thanked fans for their outpouring of support and described the trip home as something that “got flipped up on its head.”

Joshua held back tears as he remembered his friends, calling them the people on his “left and my right” and saying their loss has been devastating. He said he’s drawing strength from faith and community and pledged to support the families of the deceased, promising to help “fulfill their legacy and dreams.” The video is Joshua’s first extended public account of the crash and his emotional state since the collision.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn told reporters last week that Joshua will “take his time to get back on track” as he recovers both physically and emotionally. Joshua did not outline a precise timeline for a return to competition, instead his message focused on mourning and gratitude, and on the intention to prioritize family and healing.

Social media quickly filled with tributes from fans and figures across the boxing world, many expressing solidarity and urging patience as Joshua processes the loss. The crash has raised questions about the fighter’s next steps, but for now Joshua’s public position is clear: he’s grieving, thankful for support, and committed to honoring his friends’ memory. As more details around the incident and any potential investigations emerge, Joshua’s team has indicated they will address them through official channels.
