Donald Trump unleashed another racist tirade on Twitter, this time taking aim at the diverse and progressive freshman congresswomen.
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” he mused, in part. The comment came in a string three Sunday morning (July 14) tweets where the president questions why anyone in Congress should criticize United States policy and just after a week of Democratic congressional in-fighting between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the progressive wing of her party.
“So interesting to see 'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” the president wrote on Twitter.
While he didn’t name any names, it’s pretty clear he’s referring to four women of color who have frequently been targeted by conservatives in the media.
Those congresswomen are Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Talib (D-MI), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), all of whom were born in the United States, and Ilhan Omar (D-MI) whose family fled Somalia when she was a child and is a U.S. citizen.
Trump concludes in his tweets would be “very happy” to see them leave.
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” Trump added. “Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”
This outraged many on social media, who not only pointed out the xenophobia in the president’s tweets, but also, the ignorance of suggesting the women born in America to go back to their country.
Last week, Donald Trump defended Nancy Pelosi against accusations of racism from fellow Democrats, calling it a “disgrace.”
Pelosi has since responded to Trump’s nasty comments in support of the four congresswomen.
“When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to “Make America Great Again” has always been about making America white again. Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power,” she wrote on Twitter.
“Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values,“ she added.
Donald Trump’s latest tweets are nothing new. Suggesting that an American is un-American to stoke racist fear in his voting base is what he tried to do over and over again with Barack Obama during his presidency. It’s also a strategy Donald Trump Jr. attempted just a few weeks ago when he promoted the idea that Kamala Harris wasn’t really African American.
