2025 NBA Draft Shakes Up the League With Blockbuster Trades, Bold Picks, and Brooklyn’s Big Haul
Without much suspense, the Dallas Mavericks took forward Cooper Flagg on Wednesday night with the first pick of the 2025 NBA draft.
After a tumultuous year that saw the team trade Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Mavericks, at 1.8% odds, won the draft lottery and the right to select Flagg. As a freshman, Flagg lived up to the high expectations that were placed on him at Duke University. He won the Naismith College Player of the Year award with his all-around game, averaging 19.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals, and led the Blue Devils to a Final Four appearance.
"I'm feeling amazing. It's a dream come true, to be honest," said Flagg, 18, after his selection. "I wouldn't want to share it with anybody else."
"It's a generational talent, a once-in-a-lifetime chance," said Nico Harrison, the Mavericks' general manager, following the team’s selection. "So, just top to bottom, we're excited."
I think the biggest thing is he's a two-way player," Harrison said. "When you watch him play, he plays hard. ... When you have a player that's that good and people talk about the intangibles -- they don't talk about basketball -- then that's a guy who's going to add to your culture."
As expected, Rutgers guard Dylan Harper was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the number 1 pick. Baylor wing V.J. Edgecombe went to the Philadelphia 76ers with the third selection. Kon Knueppel, Flagg’s Duke teammate, was picked by the Charlotte Hornets at No. 4.
The biggest surprise of the first round was the Utah Jazz picking Rutgers forward Ace Bailey. Unlike his peers, Bailey didn’t work out for any team leading up to the Draft, and rumors speculated that he wanted to be drafted by the Wizards. Regarded as the best player left, the Jazz took a chance on Bailey to round out the top 5.
While the new players were being drafted, established NBA players were on the move. The Hornets traded center Mark Williams to the Phoenix Suns for two first-round picks. Bolstering their front line, the Suns also drafted Khaman Maluach with the 10th overall pick.
The Brooklyn Nets had five picks in the first round and made every selection without any trades. All five players selected will remain with the Nets.
The second round of the Draft will take place on Thursday (June 26).
