Beloved Youth Coach Speaks Out After His Truck Is Covered In Racist Symbols
A 20-year-old Bay Area man has been arrested on suspicion of a hate crime after a beloved youth basketball coach’s vehicle was vandalized with racist slurs and hate symbols, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
According to local news, surveillance footage from a downtown parking garage led them to the suspect, Corey Newman, who is accused of targeting the coach’s SUV over several days in early December.
The victim, William “Bull” Bullard, is a former Harlem Globetrotter and local coach who shared video of the vandalism on Instagram, where viewers could see swastikas, racial slurs, and other hate symbols scrawled into the dust on his truck.
In a follow-up video, Bullard told followers that racism “is not a game” and that he has faced it his entire life, from growing up in Detroit to now mentoring kids in a community where Black and brown folks make up a small minority.
Petaluma police initially struggled to find evidence in the parking garage, but later obtained a warrant after reviewing footage that they say shows the suspect defacing Bullard’s vehicle. Officers arrested him during a traffic stop, booking him on suspicion of property vandalism and a hate crime, charges that carry enhanced penalties in California when bias is proven.
Bullard, who co-owns a local gym meant to be a safe space for young people, said he went public to raise awareness and encourage others to speak out when they experience hate.
“It is tough to deal with being a minority here in Sonoma County, where it is 1-2% Black,” Bullard previously shared with a local outlet. “With my impact within the community, to walk outside to your car and see that is really tough.”
