August Alsina Addresses Rumors About His Relationship With Jada Pinkett-Smith Following Controversial Video
The release of New Orleans-bred heartthrob August Alsina’s “Nunya (Remix)” in early April garnered all the attention from R&B mavens, but unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons.
The lyric video accompanying the record, which was a spin-off to Kehlani’s original While We Wait single, quickly became the talk of the town instead of the actual track. As most of Alsina’s fans know, the 26-year-old holds a close relationship with the Smith family, and more narrowly, the matriarch, Jada Pinkett-Smith. So when fans noticed a distinct reference to Jada in the lyric video, rumors of a possible illicit affair between her and August inevitably followed. But not if the Testimony crooner himself had anything to say about it, which he did in a new Instagram video pulling the plug on the rumor mill.

An iPhone SMS text message conversation unfolding in real time sets the tone as August’s memeoji sings along with the track. In the hostile exchange, the contact for the text messages is named as “Koren” — Jada’s actual middle name — with a heartbreak emoji. The second reference comes in the form of a GIF featuring Jada from her A Low Down Dirty Shame 1994 film, which August uses at one point as a response to her in the text messages. “Koren” nudges at August in the conversation before suddenly condemning him for being with another woman. “Why is you textin me,” he responds in the messages, “why you care about who having sex with me? Now u all on my line why you pressing me?” As the conversation becomes tenser, fans also took notice to his “YOU’RE JUST AN ACTRESS!!!” outburst to her in the texts as well.
The internet witnessed all they needed to see from the video, and thus, drew their own conclusions on what they think August was really trying to say about his relationship with Jada:
Despite his silence afterward, August was well aware of the speculation
... and returned to Instagram to do away with it. “Been quiet & still amongst all the noise last week, more so out of respect for Nip,” he wrote in his responsive Instagram caption on a new video. “But I’ve been paying attention to all the theories of conspiracy 😂🙄😐 in regard to ‘NunYa’ Remix…So Here’s To Clarity. The Song is not about Jada.” August clarified that the song is simply a record including his “free artistic expression” and a made-up narrative stemming from that. He thanked his fans for the love and support of the record ensuring that more music is on the way, but as for his relationship with Jada, there is no tension as some suspected from the video. “Me and by BEST (@jadapinkettsmith) are good!!! & We will always be 4Life! We’ve been talking [everyday] while all this has taken place. Now [y’all] stop trippin’. Lol…U know we got BIG love for the Goddess over on this side.”
