This Cool New Scholarship Is Inspired by Kendrick Lamar

A Philly-based company is offering a scholarship inspired by Kendrick Lamar.

Multimedia outlet Oogee Woogee created the “Be Alright College Scholarship,” a $1,500 check for a college-bound student at New Jersey’s High Tech High.

The scholarship, which is named after Lamar’s “Alright” single, covers books and tuition for the lucky winner, and a chance to have their work screened at the company’s multi-media center.

High Tech High is the first school to participate in the scholarship plan, which hopes to expand to other schools. The idea came about after one of the school’s teachers went viral for incorporating Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly lyrics into his curriculum. The unique teaching tool led to a surprise visit from the TDE MC.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be currently enrolled in, or have graduated from, High Tech High in 2015, with plans to attend college or trade school.

High Tech High School students are required to create a 2-3 minute video explaining the positive aspects of Hip Hop and showcasing their own individual talents,” reads a statement on the site. “The videos will then be posted on our Facebook page to have their peers like, share and comment. The video that receives the most likes and shares, and based on our 3 person-judging panel, wins the scholarship.”

Submissions are being excepted until Tuesday, Aug. 24.
