Walt Disney Animation Shuts Down ‘Tiana’ Series Release
Walt Disney Animation Studios has axed the planned Princess Tiana series on Disney+.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio has ended its longform content creation on the streaming platform. At the same time, a spokesperson for the company also revealed layoffs in its Vancouver studio. The show’s creative team also underwent multiple changes, but the mounting production costs reportedly made it impossible to take on. While the show might be shelved, Walt Disney Animation is said to be developing a short form project about Princess Tiana, which is currently in its early stages with Joyce Sherri and Steve Anderson as co-directors.
The Tiana animated series was announced in December 2020, roughly 11 years after “The Princess and the Frog” was released, starring Anika Noni Rose as Disney’s first Black princess, Tiana, Keith David, Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard and more. The film, set in 1920s New Orleans, centers on Tiana, a dedicated waitress who dreams of owning a soul food restaurant. Tiana turns into a frog after kissing Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos), who has been transformed into a frog by the wicked voodoo witch doctor Facilier, with the two put on an adventure to turn human again before it's too late.
In 2024, Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland was reopened as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
