3 Past Winners of 'Video of the Year' At The Soul Train Awards

Beyoncé, Blue Ivy, Saint Jhn & Wizkid took home the honors at the 2020 Soul Train Awards.

The nominees for the 2021  Soul Train Awards “Video of the Year” Award include some of the most talked about innovative and eye-catching visuals from this year.

The artists in the running for this year’s honors are: Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak (Silk Sonic),Chris Brown, H.E.R., Wizkid,  Normani, and Jazmine Sullivan  with her single “Pick Up Your Feelings.”

Whoever will take this year’s award will get to share the titles with some of the best to ever do it including Beyoncé, Michael and Janet Jackson. As we prepare to celebrate a night of R&B and soul music, please check out some past winners of this prestigious category.

  • Beyoncé Formation 2016

Beyoncé is the only artist in Soul Train Awards history to ever be nominated twice in the same category. She was also nominated for her visual for “Sorry” off the same project.

  • Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson “Scream” 1996

Everything about this critically acclaimed Mark Romanek-directed futuristic black-and-white visual made it a serious contender for “Video of the Year.” Unlike his other project, Michael left much of the concept up to Romanek.

The nearly 5-minute short film featured Michael and his younger sister Janet, breaking things and having a blast in space--not to mention that killer dance breakdown-- which was all reportedly in response to the immense amount of backlash Jackson had received around the early 90s. “Scream” would go on to earn several awards including a Grammy for “Best Musical Video”—not bad for a $7 million project.

  • Bruno Mars “24K Magic” 2017

Bruno took home the win during 2017 Soul Train Music Awards  with this No. 1 hit single. With 1.4  billion views on YouTube, we couldn’t leave out this little number that pays tribute to all the elements of soul and funk music, and the culture as a whole, in its music video.
