Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Breaks Silence
Justice Clarence Thomas broke his seven-year silence at Supreme Court oral arguments on Monday with a joke. His exact words aren’t certain, but some speculate he was a taking jab at his alma mater, Yale Law School.
SCOTUSblog broke the news on Twitter: “Thomas, J. (Yale, JD), speaks: funny at argument — Yale degree could mean lawyer is incompetent, not competent, capital trial counsel.”
The Washington Post reports that his words were muffled by the voices of fellow justices, and suggests he could have been throwing Harvard under the bus:
“Thomas seemed to be making a lighthearted joke about lawyers trained at his alma mater, Yale Law School, or its rival, Harvard; the Ivy League is a common Thomas target. But several justices were speaking and laughing at the time, and Thomas’s exact comments apparently are lost to history.”
In the past, Thomas expressed regret for attending Yale and wanted no connection with the school. But the justice returned to speak to alumni at the school in December 2011.
