ICE Raid at Southside Chicago Homeless Shelter Sparks Outrage

Federal agents detained four people outside a Chicago shelter, leaving residents shaken and leaders questioning the operation.

Federal immigration agents carried out a raid outside a homeless shelter in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood on Wednesday morning, detaining four people and leaving residents shaken.

According to FOX 32 Chicago, the incident happened around 9 a.m. CST, when about seven unmarked SUVs arrived at the shelter, which is run by the Bright Star Community Development Corporation. Leaders at the organization described the scene as chaotic.

“There were about 30 to 35 masked agents. In the streets, all over the place—you see chaos,” said Chris Harris, who serves as the senior pastor at Bright Star Church. “And they just completely caught everybody off guard.”

Executive Director Caryl West explained that roughly 20 residents had been outside at the time, either preparing for work or getting some air, when agents exited their vehicles and began chasing people. “[The agents] jumped out, exited and there were about 20 residents, maybe, outside here, and they immediately gave chase,” West said. “They did not present warrants or ask if they could speak to any residents. They just showed up.”

Officials at the shelter reported that five people were initially detained, but one was later released, leaving four individuals in ICE custody. Surveillance video and Facebook Live footage from Pastor Harris captured the scene. “They showed up at our shelter here in Bronzeville,” he said during the livestream.

Harris added that agents were “not rude” but “absolutely pretty firm about what they were here to do. They didn’t want to talk, didn’t want to communicate very much, they just came to do what they came to do. And what was really heartbreaking for me, there was very little compassion.”

The Bronzeville facility houses 260 men and women.
