Future: A New Day
With Atlanta’s current music climate being a bit foggy due to the uncertainty that surrounds the careers of its major players—T.I., Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy—the future is bright for at least one of the city’s newcomers.
Currently enjoying the success of his street banger “Tony Montana” featuring Drake ATLien rapper Future is the brightest young star repping the A. The Southern spitta tells BET.com his recent entry into the spotlight was no easy journey.
“If you work for something your day is gon’ come,” Future says of the many false starts in his career. “You just have to be ready for when it comes. You’ve gotta be prepared.”
Cousin to Organized Noize founding member Rico Wade, Future has been able to listen and learn from some of the greatest artists his hometown has to offer. Before joining fellow Atlanta artist/executive Rocko at A1/FreeBandz Entertainment in 2008, Future toiled his craft in the ATL underground scene.
“I met Future when he came to my studio when I was working with Dem Franchize Boyz” says Rocko “I took a liking to him and we’ve been rocking ever since.”
It’s one thing to impress one of your local peers, but Future proved to have a broader appeal that caught the eye of rap headliner, Drake. The Canadian music phenom reached out to the upstart rhyme slinger to offer a verse to “Tony Montana” after hearing the record, which is currently in the Top 50 on the R&B/Hip Hop charts.
“He just made the call and got on the song and sent the verse back.” Future recalls. “That’s when I saw my hard work start paying off. You can just work toward something and not even think about it and it’ll end up coming to you.”
Much of that diligence started to pay dividends earlier this year after Future gained recognition for his contributions to YC Worldwide’s smash hit “Racks.” Sharing a Best Club Banger nomination at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards for his assistance on the record Future is seemingly poised to retain his hard earned presence on the clubs and street.
Future recently signed with Epic Records as one of the first signees under the new LA Reid regime, now the Atlanta native says fans can look forward to his debut Pluto sometime next year.
