Box Office: Gravity Pulls in Another $44.3 Million
Audiences can't seem to get enough of Gravity. The 3D survivor's tale set in space, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, grossed $44.3 million at the box office this weekend, easily capturing first place for the second week in a row. The film's domestic total has already rocketed passed the $100 million mark and broken October box office records.
In second place, Captain Phillips captured a better-than-expected $26 million. The Somali pirate pic starring Tom Hanks also enjoys strong reviews. Third place went to the animated film Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, grossing $14.2 million and pushing its total to $78 million.
Machete Kills, the Robert Rodriguez pulp action film with an all-star cast, including Sofia Vergara, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Lady Gaga, bombed in fourth place, with just $3.8 million in ticket sales — the worst opening of Rodriguez's career.
Rounding out the top five were Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck's Runner Runner and Hugh Jackman's Prisoners, which both earned $3.7 million.
This Friday, it's all about Carrie! The modern re-imaginging of Stephen King's horror classic hits theaters on Friday, up against Benedict Cumberbatch in The Fifth Estate and Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave.
