Aaron Hernandez's Lawyer Makes 'Deflate Gate' Joke During Murder Trial

Judge, annoyed, reminds attorney that they're conducting "serious business."

A murder trial isn’t a good place to tell a joke. But Aaron Hernandez’s lawyer, James Sultan, tried one anyway.

Questioning a state trooper about tire pressure Thursday, Sultan asked whether the trooper had ever received “training in football deflation devices,” a joke and reference toward Hernandez’s ex-team, the New England Patriots, and their “Deflate Gate” scandal, ESPN is reporting.

Friday morning in court, Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh took the time to warn Sultan that a murder trial isn’t a place for a joke and that “serious business” is being conducted. Sultan immediately apologized.

Jurors are also visiting Hernandez’s home on Friday.

On Thursday, prosecutors in the murder trial walked through Hernandez’s home and objected to memorabilia and religious items that were added before jurors visited. ESPN legal analyst Lester Munson says prosecutors learned from prosecutors’ failure in the O.J. Simpson case, where late lawyer Johnnie Cochran had Simpson’s house set up with family photos and a bible prominently displayed.

Hernandez, 25, is on trial for the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, who was 27 years old and dating Hernandez's fiancee's sister at the time of his homicide.
