12 Days of Pride: Kierra Johnson Is Organizing the Future of Queer Justice
Kierra Johnson brings a strategic approach to everything she tackles. As the President of the National LGBTQ Task Force, she leads with both conviction and clarity—fusing decades of frontline advocacy with a commitment to justice. Her leadership isn’t just a title; it’s a reflection of years spent organizing, building power, and expanding the conversation around LGBTQ+ rights to include reproductive justice, racial equity, and youth leadership. 12 Days of Pride is BET.com’s tribute to the power and presence of Black queer leaders across generations who are defining what Pride looks like from the inside out. “The reality is that for centuries, LGBTQ Black people have been living out loud and unapologetically Black while also living and loving,” Kierra says. “The thing that is most disheartening—and frankly scary—in this time is that we have been targeted for all kinds of reasons and right now to have the government actively organizing and giving a green light to target us physically and in every other way…it’s really scary to be attacked on multiple fronts in such a vicious and ferocious way.”
What makes Kierra’s presence in 12 Days of Pride so vital is not just what she stands for, but how she shows up. As a Black bisexual woman at the helm of one of the nation's most impactful queer organizations, she embodies what it means to lead from lived experience. In this episode, she speaks candidly about navigating systems, shaping policy, and holding space for joy amid resistance.
