See How This Black Model Put Herself in Famous Ad Campaigns
Fashion has gradually been making strides in the diversity department, meaning more shades and sizes of models than ever before. But Deddeh Howard, Los Angeles-based model, and photographer Raffael Dickreuter are reminding us with their new project that the industry still has some work to do.
Their picture series, Black Mirror, shows the African model mimicking some of the most high-profile fashion campaigns in an effort to shed light on the lack on Black models given the opportunity to shine. Howard herself grew up in Liberia and faced this struggle upon moving to LA to pursue her modeling dreams.
“Even though I was told by those agencies that I have an amazing look and [they] wish they could represent me, they already have a Black model,” she told the Daily Mail. “It seemed as if one or two Black models on the roster are enough to represent us all. When you are told that, trust me, it feels bizarre.”
See below how Howard and Dickreuter were able to recreate shoots, everything from the makeup to the pose, done by Gisele Bundchen, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and others.
