Trump Says He Doesn’t Think About Americans’ Financial Struggles

The president’s blunt remarks triggered swift criticism as inflation and gas prices remain top worries for households.

On Tuesday, before departing for a diplomatic trip to China, President Donald Trump and reporters gathered on the White House lawn to discuss his nearly week-long trip and Iran.

When a reporter asked the President whether the financial situation of Americans motivated him to make a deal with Iran, Trump offered a blunt retort.

“Not even a little bit,” he said without missing a beat. “The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran — they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

“I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation,” Mr. Trump added. “I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.”

The moment quickly drew criticism online, with many arguing it showed how disconnected he is from everyday economic pressures. “The ‘let them eat cake’ of 2026,” said one user about Trump’s comments.

The comment comes during a delicate moment for most Americans around the country as gas prices reach record numbers and the prices of groceries and rent continue to soar.

According to NBC News, inflation rose for a second straight month and hit a three-year high, intensifying concerns about prices just as Trump said the economy was not shaping his approach. The New York Times reported that Trump insisted the stock market was at an all-time high and framed the nuclear threat as the only issue that mattered.

The moment adds to a growing political fight over how much the war in Iran is impacting household budgets.

Trump is the wealthiest U.S. president in American history. As of March 2026, Forbes estimates his net worth to be $6.5 billion, and he is expected to accumulate billions more before the end of his second term.

This comment gives critics a new line of attack: that his foreign-policy priorities are disconnected from the financial strain many Americans are feeling at home.
