Tisha Campbell Said Men Want To Date ‘Gina,’ Not Her
Tisha Campbell believes her most famous TV role is the biggest obstacle in her dating life.
The multi-hyphenate — who finalized her divorce from Duane Martin in 2020 after 27 years together — told Big Reid on 99.7 NOW in the Bay Area that people still come for “Gina,” her loud-and-loved character from “Martin,” instead of getting to know her. She shared that a friend said she wasn’t marriage material.
“And I said, ‘Why? I’ve been married before,’” Campbell recalled. “She was like, ‘Nah, everybody just want to date Gina, it’s not marriage right now. The position that you’re in, people just want to date Gina.’ They don’t want to get to know me for me.”
Campbell admitted she’s “very shy” when it comes to dating and confessed she never really experienced casual dating before marriage. “I’ve only had boyfriends and then went straight into marriage. I never went on a proper date,” she said. “No one’s ever asked me on a date to go eat dinner. I never had that.”
The interview also touched on her financial struggles post-divorce. Campbell had a bankruptcy case that began in 2016 and finally closed in 2024. She shared this stark memory on “The Breakfast Club” and said she was down to “$21 in my pocket” during the holidays. “It was Christmas and I had a choice to try to get some extra toys for my kids at the Rite Aid or something,” Campbell said. She shares two kids with fellow actor Duane Martin, 23-year-old Xen and 15-year-old Ezekiel.
Campbell realized that her dating life is a part of a long journey of self-discovery and healing, which is a solid path to be on when the dating pool has pee in it.
