Will Serena Return to Tennis? Venus Has High Hopes
Tennis champion Venus Willams is playing at the DC Open and much like their fandom she misses her sister Serena Williams on the court.
“She can take six months off and she clocks it clean,” Venus said at a press conference ahead of the DC Open. “You can’t teach that kind of talent. She’s just so good."
“We always did everything together, so of course I miss her,” Venus shared.
Together the sisters boast an impressive 14-0 Grand Slam doubles tournament wins.
“I’m her biggest fan, and when she retired I was like 'whyyyyyyy?'” Venus gushed about her little sister.
“But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let y’all know.”
A champion for all women in the sport, Venus worked hard to fight for pay equity in tennis. Less than 20 years ago, the five-time champion played a key role in fighting for WTA players to receive the same amount of prize money as male champions. Her letter in The Times was instrumental in the fight.
After a two-year battle, a move to equal prize money was announced in 2007. Venus Williams was the first women's champion to receive it, as per WTA.
As for Venus, who has battled health issues, she had this to say about her own return at the DC Open:
“I’m just here for now, and who knows?” Venus said. “Maybe there’s more. ... But at the moment, I’m focused just on this. I haven’t played in a year. There is no doubt I can play tennis, but obviously coming back to play matches, it takes time to get in the swing of things. I definitely feel I’ll play well. I’m still the same player. I’m a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand.”
The MUBADALA CITI DC OPEN will run from July 19— July 27, 2025 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington, DC.
