DJ Clark Kent Remembers Biggie's Visionary Work On "Sky's The Limit"

He remembers discussing which artist to give the instrumentals of the legendary song to.

March 9 marked the passing of the 20th anniversary of the Notorious B.I.G.’s tragic early death. In honor, all types of stories have made their way onto the web in remembrance of the hip-hop legend.

BET recently sat down with famed producer and turntablist DJ Clark Kent for a segment called “I Talked To Biggie.” During the interview, CK remembered B.I.G.’s knack for creating a song before they even hit the studio. The way he could put a hit together before it was even recorded was, according to Clark Kent, something extremely special.

“When he heard a track it was done, and it was done immediately – not wrote it, but he heard the song,” he explained. “When he heard ‘Sky’s The Limit,’ I was like, well this track is for Akinyele so you can’t have it. He’s like, ‘Nah,’ I need that. I said, ‘Not for Junior M.A.F.I.A.!’ He’s like, ‘Nah, that’s for my album.’

Biggie told Clark Kent to hold the future instrumental for “Sky’s The Limit” for two years until he began working on his next album, which would turn out to be Life After Death. At the time, Kent and B.I.G. were working on the Junior M.A.F.I.A. album.

“I gotta play it for [Jay Z] ‘cause Jay comes first,” Clark Kent explained. “That’s why Ak had it, Sauce Money didn’t like it, that’s why Ak had it. LL Cool J didn’t like it, that’s why Ak ended up with it, that’s why B.I.G. wanted it. Everytime we spoke about the song it was him singing the hook, and then we got 112 on it, but he was singing the hook the day he heard it.”

Amazing.
