Oprah Opens Her Private Road in Maui to Aid Tsunami Evacuation After Massive Quake

As tsunami waves reached Hawaii’s shores following a powerful earthquake off Russia’s coast, Oprah Winfrey stepped up, opening her private road to help residents evacuate safely.

When nature came knocking, Oprah Winfrey didn’t hesitate. As tsunami waves reached the Hawaiian islands following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the media mogul opened up her private road in Maui to help with emergency evacuations.

On Tuesday, July 29, Hawaii felt the impact of the quake’s aftermath as tsunami waves began to hit. A 4-foot wave was recorded off Oahu, while a wave over 5 feet high hit Kahului on Maui’s north-central shore. A 4.5-foot wave also touched down in Hilo. With parts of Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast under tsunami advisories, residents scrambled to higher ground—especially in Maui’s Upcountry region, which sits along the slopes of Haleakalā.

That’s where Winfrey stepped in. According to a news release from Maui County, she opened her private road to provide residents with an alternative route out. “Oprah’s road is open to get Upcountry,” the Maui Police Department confirmed.

Her team wasted no time coordinating with FEMA and local law enforcement. “As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened,” a spokesperson said. “Any other reports are otherwise false.”

Authorities were on site, helping vehicles through in groups of 50 to avoid bottlenecks and keep the area safe. The road, they said, would stay open for as long as needed.

By 11 p.m. local time, the tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center gave the green light for evacuees to return home, according to Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Director Stephen Logan.

The quake, one of the strongest ever recorded, also sent waves toward the West Coast. A 4-foot, 4-inch tide hit California’s Arena Cove around 3 a.m. local time. CNN confirmed waves reached parts of Washington and Oregon as well.

No major damage has been reported so far, but officials are still urging folks to steer clear of shorelines until things settle down.
