Democrats Sing “We Shall Overcome” In Protest of Rep. Al Green Censure
The U.S. House of Representatives censured Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green for interrupting President Donald Trump's Tuesday speech to Congress.
Just days after Rep. Green was dismissed for the interjection, on Thursday, March 6, the Republican-controlled House censured Green by a vote of 224-198, with ten votes made by Democrats. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., read the censure resolution to Green as he stood in the House chamber well following the vote.
Multiple Democrats, including members of the Congressional Black Caucus, accompanied Green for a rendition of the gospel song “We Shall Overcome,” which was utilized throughout the civil rights movement.
While Republicans in the chamber called for order, the group ignored the request, so the House went to recess. Afterwards, Green addressed the moment on X, formerly Twitter.
“Today, the House GOP censured me for speaking out for the American people against
@POTUS ’s plan to cut Medicaid,” he wrote. “I accept the consequences of my actions, but I refuse to stay silent in the face of injustice. #WeShallOvercome.”
During the Congress meeting earlier this week, Green shouted at Trump about not having a mandate to cut Medicaid. Trump would later tell Fox News Digital that Green "should be forced to pass an IQ test because he is a low IQ individual, and we don’t need low IQ individuals in Congress.”
