17-Year-Old Spelman Student Kamora Freeland Soars to New Heights as New York’s Youngest Pilot
17-year-old Staten Island native Kamora Freeland is paving the way for Black girls who see a future in flight.
According to reports, the teenager passed her private pilot's license last year, becoming the youngest pilot in New York and the youngest Black female pilot. As of this year, Freeland skipped her freshman year at Spelman College after earning college credits in high school, which technically completed her first-year requirements.
“Starting college as a sophomore has been a whirlwind of emotions—exciting, overwhelming, and liberating all at once,” Freeland told the Advance/SILive.com about attending the HBCU. “It’s like stepping into a whole new world where you’re figuring out who you are, balancing independence, and navigating friendships, academics, and late-night study sessions.”
Besides her impressive educational background, including skipping time at Kingsborough Early College Secondary School and Kingsborough Community College, Freeland is also a birthing doula and lifeguard.
However, piloting continues to be the teen’s “passion,” which Freeland told ABC 7 early last year while detailing her private pilot’s license exam. Freeland's mother enrolled her in a scholarship program to become a private pilot, which signaled the beginning of her aviation career.
“It's definitely amazing,” Freeland told the outlet. “I'm a part of the change that's definitely needed and I want other little Black girls to do the same.”
