In Memoriam: TakeOff's Best Bars

The late rapper's lyrics spoke for themselves.

Heading out of October into November, hip-hop was stunned at the news that Migos rapper TakeOff was murdered following an altercation in Houston. The quietest member of the trio, TakeOff was known for having some seriously quotable bars during his time with Migos alongside solo work and most recently alongside Quavo as Unc and Phew. Music notables from Kid Cudi, Gucci Mane, Chika, Rick Ross, Chlöe Bailey all mourned the tragic and senseless nature of the Atlanta native’s death.

In honor of Takeoff, we look into some of his best bars.

  • "Cross The Country", Rich Nigga Timeline

Whatever I wanna do, I do it, Nike check (do it)

I'm a young nigga with the rich nigga ambitions

At the Migo show, a nigga autographing titties

There's levels to this shit like Meek said”

Released following the success of their breakout Rich Young Niggas mixtape, Rich Nigga Timeline was good enough for rap legend Q-Tip to give Migos a shout-out. Takeoff’s verse on intro “Cross The Country” became a clear standout of the project.

  • "Slippery", Culture

“What's in that box (Huh?) Don't tell 'em, they might show the cops (Shh)

Wristwatch (Bite), abnormal so I flood the clock (Ice)

Money flop, panties drop, that's when them titties pop (Woo)

    Free my partners (John Wick)

'Til they free it's fuck the cops (Fuck 'em)

They know I geek a lot

They don't know I keep a Glock (Clueless)

    Ain't been no drought (Where)

They think I been sleep a lot

    They think I'm dumb (Dumb)

They don't know I see the plot (See it)

Fuck it I seize a knot”

Though TakeOff was noticeably absent from Culture mega-hit “Bad and Boujee,” he definitely made up for that through single “Slippery” which featured Gucci Mane.

  • "Versace", Young Rich Niggas

“You can do Truey, I do Versace

You copped the Honda, I copped the Mazi

You smoke the mid, I smoke exotic

I set the trend, you niggas copy

Cooking the dope, like I work at Hibachi

Lookin and watching, blow it, hot like some Taki

Come in my room, my sheet Versace

When i go to sleep, I dream Versace”

Migos wouldn’t have had their run without “Versace.” The ode to the Italian luxury brand and the subsequent Drake remix stamped the Atlanta group as the future.

  • "Last Memory", The Last Rocket

“She pop a perc, her pu--y wetter (Drip)

I met the b--ch at Coachella (Coachella)

If she knew, tell her she'd probably do better

    But can I get a E for effort? (E)

I prayed to God to wash my sins (God)

Nothing formed against me, not a weapon (No weapon)

Ask Him where do I begin (Where?)

Devil tryna take my blessings (My blessings)”

2018 saw Migos take a short break to release solo work which included TakeOff’s The Last Rocket. The project definitely proved Takeoff could handle his own body of work.

  • "Frosted Flakes" Quality Control: Control The Streets Volume 2

“Took 'em back when we trapped out the back of the bando

    We came from nothin' (Bando)

On my knees tell to God please protect my soul, the demons is huntin' (Please)

Thank God we done been across the globe, across the country (Thank you)

With the traffic outside and the door don't close, the trap be bunkin' (Hah)

Wrap it up and give it to the junkie (Junkie)

Catch a boy, gon' buy it by the bunches (Country)

Pack it up and move next Monday (Pack)

'Cause the neighbors, they be lookin' real funny”

Migos’ label home Quality Control released two Control The Streets projects as a way to showcase their standard and newer roster of artists. “Frosted Flakes” was a standout cut on the project partly due to Takeoff’s verse.

  • "Hotel Lobby", Only Built For Infinity Links

    “Let's get it

    Hop off a sixteen passenger

This a G5, no, this not a Challenger (Big one)

I keep some members with me and the freaks get coach seats

    They some cannibals (Eaters)

They like to get geeked, drink a whole bottle, wake up and repeat (Damn)”

Though Migos would breakout this year and release Unc & Phew with just Quavo and TakeOff. The album, Only Built For Infinity Links, proved that the two could carry the Migos swag even when missing a member.
