Two LA Women Turn Passion into Purpose, Supporting Plus-Size Fire Victims
Christa Cole, a nail technician and owner of Nailgician in Pasadena, quickly sprang into action when she learned that the Eaton Fire had impacted the very community that supported her small business. Her desire to give back was ignited when an Altadena-based client, who had tragically lost their home in the fire, mentioned needing plus-size clothing. Cole immediately took to social media, calling for donations to help her friend.
"I commented on [Paija's] post and said, 'Hey, I'm looking for plus-size clothing,' and the next thing I know, she's like, 'Okay, don't worry about it, I got you,'" Cole recalls.
Paija Hudson, a professional makeup artist and Cole's longtime client and friend, felt compelled to act. She organized a donation drive, understanding firsthand how challenging and expensive it is to rebuild after losing everything—especially for plus-size individuals, who are often overlooked by donation centers.
"I realized as a plus-size woman, even if I have all the money in the world, there aren't a lot of places where I can walk in and replace my entire wardrobe," Hudson explains. "That’s what inspired me to ask, 'Is anyone collecting plus-size clothing, or should I start collecting it myself?'"
Together, Cole and Hudson founded Sincerely, 2 LA Girls. The name reflects their pride as passionate Los Angeles natives who are dedicated to giving back to their city through acts of kindness. Both credit their parents for teaching them selflessness early on, as they remember participating in annual closet cleanouts and donating unused clothing to women’s shelters. With these values instilled in them, launching a nonprofit to help plus-size individuals impacted by the California wildfires was a natural step.
Their customized care packages include gently used or new clothing, essential toiletries, bedding, and more. Families in need can request a personalized package via their website and either pick it up from their Pasadena location or have it delivered to their doorstep.
What began as Cole's private studio suite for her nail business has now transformed into the headquarters for their donation center. In a short amount of time, the duo has created a ripple effect throughout Los Angeles, bringing attention to the needs of the plus-size community. Donations have poured in, including clothing from Democracy Clothing and luggage from Calpak. Cole and Hudson are thrilled to see the Nailgician studio overflowing with support for their clients, neighbors, and friends. Witnessing Los Angeles embrace the Altadena community has restored their faith in humanity.
"Our next goal is to host a shop day," Cole says when asked about the nonprofit's future. "We want to set everything up on racks so people can pick what they want. For now, we’re giving them what they need, but eventually, we’d like to invite them back to shop for items they love."
Sincerely, 2 LA Girls is currently seeking more donations. For more information or to contribute, please contact Cole and Hudson here.
