STREAM EXCLUSIVE ORIGINALS

This Weekend: Here’s What to Watch, Listen to & Experience

Spend time off with Austin Millz, Lady London, and India Shawn.

When it comes to content, it’s easy for us to stick to what we know or want that old thing back. But for a rare few, being a true content connoisseur is about being on top of what’s hot, what’s trending, and what’s next. Luckily, this new guide is everything you need for your music, literary, film, TV, and live experiences.

This will be the last week, hopefully not too long, where Kevin L. Clark will be your go-to advocate, spotlighting all those content cravings worth enjoying.

This Weekend, a weekly round-up for content culture lovers, is/was for those who love to avoid FOMO.

For Friday, July 29, this week’s closing episode finds us with some freshly-discovered treasures for you, your family, and friends to get into + share with others. It contains a healthy dose of sonic vibes, live experiences, and, of course, something streaming that’s a feast for the eyes.

So bon appétit to all those true savants who are purveyors of content culture out there.

For Listeners Only:

You’ve seen him start the party on social media. Now, enjoy his music from the comfort of wherever you are. Austin Millz has been on your radar for a while now, and his Roc Nation debut is out. “Tukuntazo” by the Dominican Republic queer rapper Tokischa was the breakout track that made Millz a must-hear artist.

Still, this one features Latin rappers Haraca Kiko and El Cherry Scom helping to place dembow into the mainstream. Keep this one active and on repeat for a high-octane summer!

Lady London, the eagerly-anticipated multi-hyphenate, is dropping the trending topic-worthy single called “What Is It Giving” out now. Building on the slang sweeping through social media and conversations, this larger-than-life offering, with its infectious hook and defiantly dope punchlines by London, is a welcomed glimpse of what to expect from this rising talent.

Watch the video and share what it giving via BET Music on Twitter.

India Shawn — the irresistible singer-songwriter whose work with James Fauntleroy and Anderson .Paak are must-play classics — brings her sensibilities and light to this new single, “CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE.”

The Dennis Leupold-directed visual finds Shawn reliving the ups and downs of a rocky romance while teaching the listener possible ways to better love themselves through her expansive vocal range. If you’re a fan of her intimate style, this is one to add to your rotation ASAP.

Special Mentions: There is also some exceptionally dope work from Dre’es (“Pure Sugar”), Terence Etc. (“The Merchant of Flatbush”), Jay Worthy & Harry Fraud feat. Kamaiyah (“GOOD LOOKIN’”) and Brandon (“Cherie”) that you cannot afford to miss.

Watch The Streams:

This Weekend wanted to share an advance look at a new comedy you should immediately add to your watch list.

Easter Sunday, a feel-good family feature based on comedian Jo Koy’s life, will be in theaters on Aug. 5 and co-stars Tia Carerre, Tiffany Haddish, and Eva Noblezada

Set around a family gathering to spend the holidays together, Koy’s newest adventure is worth joining him upon.

BET.com was cool enough to get an exclusive shout-out from the DC League of Super Pets cast. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart star as a couple of pets who belong to two of the greatest heroes of all time.

When Krypto (Johnson) finds himself without his owner, Superman, and without the aid of the other human superheroes, Ace (Hart) and his superpower-infused animal comrades must team up with Super-Dog to save the world and their favorite superhumans.

Watch the trailer here, and enjoy the film out this weekend.

Paper Girls, a new live-action Prime Video series based on the popular Image Comics title of the same name, continues to build upon a healthy run which includes Invincible and The Walking Dead

Initially written by Saga’s Brian K. Vaughn, four 12-year-old girls must stand together on a time-traveling mission where failing could drastically impact the world.

Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, and Fina Strazza star as the newspaper girls turned willing heroines, and this streaming series is one to watch for those who love sci-fi.

Live at the Experience:

Wine Country will turn into a Black extravaganza as Robert Glasper will premiere Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa Valley. “It stemmed from the Robtober residencies in New York City,” the Grammy Award-winning pianist and producer shared with me over the phone. “It made sense, and when we started reaching out to people, it just took off, and within an hour, we were sold out.

The Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa Valley is the first of its kind. Presented as an outdoor, multiday, and multistage event, the hype behind the event turned it from a two-day into a three-day concert, set to take place Friday-Sunday, July 29-31, at the Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena. According to the line-up, Glasper hints that concertgoers won’t get much sleep this weekend.

“I love when people aren’t expecting a moment to happen; you know what I mean?” Glasper confessed. “I have three whole days, all of these musicians and amazing artists, and this beautiful Napa space at my disposal. There are some things in the works, but I don’t even know what’s going to happen [laughs].”

Hosted by Dave Chappelle, the once-in-a-lifetime occasion will feature special guests such as D Smoke, Terrace Martin, Dinner Party, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, and more. “I’d say be prepared for the unexpected,” Glasper noted three things those in attendance should know before arriving. “Drink lots of water because you will consume a lot of f*****g alcohol. And leave your worries behind to come and have a lot of fun with us.”
