OKC Thunder Take Game 1 Over Minnesota Timberwolves In Western Conference Finals

MVP favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 31 points, his fourth game in a row that he's scored 30 or more points in the playoffs.

The Oklahoma City Thunder was in top form on Tuesday night, winning Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves 114-88.

After struggling to find their stride in the first half, the Thunder broke the game open with a 17-2 run in the third quarter. Feeding off the energy of a sold-out crowd in the Paycom Center, they outscored the Wolves 70-40, shooting 50% from the field, and 11 different Thunder players scored.

MVP favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 31 points, making it the fourth game in a row that he scored 30 or more points in the playoffs.

"We try to play to our identity," Alexander said following the game."We did a good job of that on defense. Our defense definitely gave us life early in the game and kept us in it."

"We just got a phenomenal defensive team," Alex Caruso added. "It's a collection of great individual defenders that also play great team defense. And then once we get on the break, young legs, all those dudes are running [and] dunking."

For the T’Wolves, Julius Randle scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half. Anthony Edwards finished with 18 points on 5-for-13 shooting. In the post-game press conference, Edwards expressed his confidence in his team and noted that he needs to be more aggressive on the offensive end.

"I definitely got to shoot more," Edwards said. "I only took 13 f---ing shots. ... Probably just get off the ball a little more, play without the ball. I think that will be the answer. Because playing on the ball, they're just going to double and sit in the gaps all day.

"So, got to go watch some film and pick it apart. We'll figure it out."

After returning to the locker room after rolling his ankle in the second quarter, Edwards said the injury did not impact his play.

Randle was also optimistic that the T’Wolves would perform better in Game 2.

"We proved that we can do it, but we've got to make it happen, too," Randle said. "We can't just be like, 'All right, we did it last series ... we're going to do it again.' This is a great team. They've been playing great basketball all year. So, the good thing is we proved to ourselves that we can do it. But we got to make it happen."

Game 2 of the series is set for Thursday, May 22, at 8:30 PM on ESPN.
