Katrina 10 Years Later: Through Hell in High Water to Premiere on BET on Aug. 26
A decade ago, Hurricane Katrina stormed through the Gulf Coast, destroying the New Orleans area as many in the city lost relatives while others were forced to relocate and start their lives over in new cities. Many citizens have contributed to the restoration of the city and its overall progress today.
BET will mark the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with the BET News special Katrina 10 Years Later: Through Hell in High Water, which premieres Aug. 26 at 8P/7C. The documentary features award-winning actor Wendell Pierce (The Wire and Treme) and will be hosted by BET News correspondent Jeff Johnson. The special follows several stories of survival and triumph out of Crescent City.
The network spoke with key players in the city including New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Principal Doris Hicks of MLK High School in New Orleans, resident Robert Green and visual artist B Mike. Famous New Orleans' natives such as hip hop mogul Master P, rapper Juvenile and Queen of Bounce Big Freedia told their Katrina stories and also discussed their city's beauty and resilence in a mini-documentary set to air exclusively on BET.com.
Hurricane Katrina was an Atlantic Ocean-based hurricane that made landfall in southeast Louisiana on Aug. 29, 2005, causing nearly 2,000 deaths. New Orleans suffered the most casualties, as the levee system designed to keep out flooding failed, leaving most of the city underwater.
The federal response and rescue missions were widely criticized for their ineffectiveness, raising questions about race and class disparity, and the national and local governments' ability to protect citizens in times of crisis.
