Woman Who Texted Suicidal Boyfriend 'When Are You Going to Do It?' Found Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter
A Massachusetts judge found the 20-year-old woman who repeatedly encouraged her 18-year-old boyfriend to kill himself guilty of involuntary manslaughter on Friday. Michelle Carter sent text messages to Conrad Roy asking him when he was going to commit suicide.
In July 2014, Roy killed himself by inhaling carbon monoxide produced by a water pump in his truck. During the act, Roy got out of the truck because he was scared and Carter texted him to "get back in," according to text messages read in court.
Carter waived her right to a jury trial, meaning the decision was made by Judge Lawrence Moniz.
Moniz said Carter's actions constituted 'wanton and reckless conduct'
"She instructs Roy to get back in the truck knowing of all the feelings he has exchanged with her; his ambiguities, his fears, his concerns," Moniz said. "This court finds that by instructing Mr. Roy to get back in the truck constitutes wanton and reckless conduct by Ms. Carter, creating a situation where there is a high degree of likelihood that substantial harm would result to Mr. Roy."
As the verdict was read, people in the courtroom had an audible response
Carter was released on bail and will receive her sentencing on Aug. 3. She faces up to 20 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.
