Father of Teen Fatally Shot by Police Charged in Deputy's Death
In a devastating chain of events in Cincinnati, Ohio, Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, has been charged with aggravated murder after allegedly striking and killing a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy with his vehicle, according to reports. This incident occurred just one day after Hinton's 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, was fatally shot by Cincinnati police officers.
On May 1, Ryan Hinton was involved in a police pursuit after officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in East Price Hill. During the chase, police allege that Ryan pointed a handgun at officers, prompting them to open fire. Body camera footage released by the Cincinnati Police Department shows officers shouting, "He's got a gun!" before multiple shots were fired. A firearm was recovered at the scene, but there is no indication that Ryan discharged it.
The following day, Rodney Hinton Jr. attended a meeting with Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge to view the body camera footage of his son's shooting. Family attorney Michael Wright described Hinton as "very upset, very distraught" during the viewing, noting that he left the room before the video concluded.
Later that afternoon, while a retired sheriff's deputy was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati for graduation ceremonies, Hinton allegedly drove his vehicle into the intersection, striking the deputy. The deputy, identified as Larry Henderson, was transported to UC Medical Center in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries.
Prosecutors argue that Hinton's actions were "calculated and premeditated," asserting that he deliberately accelerated his car to strike the deputy. During a court appearance on May 3, Hinton was ordered to be held without bond pending his next hearing scheduled for May 6.
The Hinton family's legal representatives have expressed profound grief over the incidents, stating, "This is an unimaginable tragedy for this community. Ryan Hinton's family is heartbroken by this tragic turn of events and we are all devastated for the family of the officer who was killed.”
Both incidents remain under investigation as the community grapples with the repercussions of these back-to-back tragedies.
