Tamera Mowry-Housley on What Changed When She and Twin Sister Tia Stopped Living Together

In a recent interview, Tamera called moving apart from her sister one of her toughest transitions and explained how distance reshaped a lifelong bond.

Sister, sister?!

In a conversation with the “Barely Famous” podcast, Tamera Mowry-Housley opened up about one of the toughest transitions of her adult life — moving out from a home she once shared with her twin sister. The actor and host said the period tested their relationship as each sister evolved into different people, and she bluntly shared details about the friction that followed, leaving their shared life.

In the episode, Mowry-Housley recalled the early arguments that followed the move and the strange, sudden sense of unfamiliarity that can happen when two people who were raised together shape separate lives. “For years, my sister and I lived together,” she said.“One of the hardest transitions of my life being a twin, was that move.” She remembered a particular moment of tension — “I remember asking Tia, ‘Who the hell are you? Who is this?’ Then she was like, ‘Well, who are you?’ Because we’re different.”

“We were so used to being the same,” she said. “Then she would force me to be like her, and then I’d force her to be like me. And it was horrible. So then, I remember us having this epiphany, we’re different. You’re the yin to my yang. We actually balance each other out.”

This particular chat lands against a backdrop of public confusion about the sisters’ closeness over recent years. While reality-TV previews and social posts once hinted at distance, the twins have repeatedly emphasized family ties and regular check-ins. Sources and follow-ups show the pair still make time for each other and have publicly celebrated reunions and birthdays together. The tone of recent interviews suggests the relationship has shifted rather than broken — grown more complex as both women balance family, careers, and separate homes.

What Mowry-Housley’s candor does is remind audiences that lifelong closeness can require new negotiations as life changes — and that being honest about friction doesn’t mean a relationship is over. Instead, it can be the prelude to a different, more mature sibling bond.
