Anderson .Paak Makes His Directorial Debut With New Film ‘K-Pops!’

The Grammy winner steps behind the camera for the first time with a personal, music-filled film starring his real-life son, and it's set to hit theaters in February.

Anderson .Paak is adding director to his already stacked resume, and honestly, it feels overdue. The Grammy-winning artist is officially making his film directorial debut with “K-Pops!,” in theaters this February.

“K-Pops!” is a music-driven comedy rooted in family, culture, and the kind of self-discovery that doesn’t come with a billboard chart position.

“K-Pops!” was co-written by .Paak and Khaila Amazan, produced by Stampede Ventures and Live Nation Productions. After premiering at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and making its U.S. debut at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, “K-Pops!” is officially headed to theaters.

The movie centers on BJ, played by .Paak, who’s down on his luck and searching for his next move. According to the film’s synopsis, BJ is “a washed-up American musician who stumbles upon a second chance at fame by cashing in on the rise of his long-lost K-pop star son.” What starts as a shot at fame quickly turns into something deeper, because “as he dives into the world of boy bands and viral fame, he discovers that being a father means more than being in the spotlight.”

For .Paak, this project hits close to home. “I’m beyond excited to share K-Pops! with audiences,” he said in a statement. “The film is an incredibly personal project for me, especially working alongside my son throughout the entire process.” He also shouted out the team behind the movie, adding, “Stampede, Big Dummy, EST, and Live Nation have been amazing partners as we’ve created the film, and I’m thrilled to bring Aura [the distribution company] onto the team. Their bold vision makes me confident this film will break through in a big way.”

The idea for the film came together during the COVID lockdown, when .Paak’s real-life son told him he wanted to be a YouTuber. Ahead of the film’s 2024 TIFF premiere .Paak told The Hollywood Reporter, “Around this time, my whole house was obsessed with K-pop.” He continued, “His mom is full Korean, and I’m part Korean, too, but I didn’t know anything about my Korean heritage.” Still, he was intentional about balance, saying, “I’m always pushing for him to learn about his Black side. I’m like, ‘You know about BTS. What about BET?”

That mix of cultures became the foundation of the story. “I thought this could be a funny story,” .Paak explained. “What if I wasn’t involved in my son’s life, he was raised in Korea, and I found out about him later, and we have to learn about each other’s cultures?”

The film stars Jonnie “Dumbfoundead” Park, Yvette Nicole Brown, and .Paak’s real-life teen son, Soul Rasheed, making the father-son storyline feel even more authentic.

“K-Pops!” will be released exclusively in AMC theaters on February 27 via Aura Entertainment.
