‘Michael’ Just Made Biopic History

The new Michael Jackson movie just hit a major milestone and has already earned $577 million globally, proving the King of Pop’s musical legacy lives on.

“Michael” is officially a box-office juggernaut, after raking in $577 million worldwide in just three weeks and surpassing “Elvis” to become the second-highest-grossing biopic ever

The film’s strong turnout has kept it near the top of the global conversation, with Deadline reporting a $95 million third weekend and a total that now trails only “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

The biopic stars Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, Michael Jackson, and follows his rise from childhood into the early years of his solo career. The film also set a record for the biggest opening ever for a biopic, according to Variety. It has performed especially well overseas, topping the box office in markets including the U.K., Germany, France, Brazil, and Australia.

"Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before," the film's synopsis reads.

The movie’s success lands squarely in a familiar place for music biopics: audiences keep showing up even when critics are mixed.

Across TikTok and other social media, it’s clear the film has also struck a chord with a number of Gen Z and Gen Alpha fans, who may not have had as much of a connection to Jackson’s music as their parents.

The draw is partly the scale of the story and partly the chance to see a pop-culture legend reimagined for a new generation. At the same time, the film’s box-office run has brought new eyes and ears to Jackson’s legacy.

“Michael” is directed by Antoine Fuqua and also stars Colman Domingo as father, Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as lawyer-manager John Branca, Laura Harrier as producer Suzanne de Passe, and Mike Myers as CBS Records executive Walter Yetnikoff.

“Michael” is in theaters everywhere now.
