2022 NAACP Image Awards: Meet the Voices Behind the Movies Nominated for ‘Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance’

Many of the films nominated feature some of Hollywood’s most beloved stars.

2021 gave young children and animation fans alike some of the most thought-out and creative films to date. Many of these movies did so well that they earned them a nomination at the 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards on happening Saturday, February 26.

These outstanding motion pictures featured colorful storylines, including a kinkajou on a musical journey to deliver a message for a dear friend and a band of singing and dancing animals attempting to put on the most extraordinary musical extravaganza ever. As we prepare to honor some of the most talented performers in Hollywood, check out the voices behind the films nominated for “Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.”

  • Andre Braugher - Spirit Untamed

    Emmy Award-winner actor Andre Braugher is perhaps best known for his role as Detective Frank in the police comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Still, in this NAACP Image Award-nominated animated film, Braugher lends his voice to Al Granger, Pru’s father.

    The veteran actor has also lent his distinct voice to animated roles in the past, such as the tyrannical DC villain Darkseid in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse in 2010 and Woodchuck Coodchuck-Berkowitz on Netflix’s Bojack Horseman for several episodes.

  • Awkwafina - Raa and the Last Dragon

    Hollywood’s breakout star of the year is the loveable water dragon Sisu, that’s all about comedy and saving humanity in Disney’s Raa and the Last Dragon. Other familiar voices include Benedict Wong, Daniel Dae Kim, and Sandra Oh.

    Actor Brian Tyree Henry lends his voice for the role of Dancarino in the Netlfix animated adventure film about a one-of-kind kinkajou with a passion for music embarks on an adventure spanning from Havana, Cuba, to Miami, Florida to fulfill his dreams.

  • Eric Andre - Sing 2

    Eric Andre is Darius the yak in the musical sequel; however, fans may know him from several other films, including The Internship, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, voiced Azizi in The Lion King Disney live-action remake. He also voiced Mark Bowman in The Mitchells vs. the Machines cast and more.

  • Letitia Wright - Sing 2

    Black Panther star Letitia Wright voices Nooshy, the ultra-talented street dancer in the musical family film. The actress is set to reprise her role as Shuri in the Marvel squeal, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
