Justin Timberlake’s Record Label Sued Over ’Suit & Tie’

'70s R&B band says imprint didn’t pay to sample vocals.

Justin Timberlake’s record label is being sued over “Suit & Tie,” TMZ reports. Two of the three members in ‘70s R&B band Sly, Slick and Wicked filed suit against Universal Music Group claiming the imprint unlawfully sampled vocals for Timberlake’s 2013 comeback single.

The Cleveland band was formally signed to James Brown’s People Records. Timberlake’s track samples SS&W’s 1973 single “Sho Nuff,” which was written and produced by Brown.

According to their lawsuit, Universal paid to sample the music but not the vocal performance. Further, SS&W members attest that they weren’t paid when “Suit & Tie” was licensed for a Bud Light commercial.

The Jay Z-assisted “Suit & Tie” led Timberlake’s third studio album, The 20/20 Experience. The single sold more than 3 million downloads and won a Grammy for Best Music Video.
