Tech To The Rescue: 5 Virtual Ways To Spend Time With Mom This Mother’s Day

Don’t let the quarantine keep you from connecting with your favorite girl.

Obviously, the global coronavirus pandemic is a real bummer, but it doesn’t have to ruin celebrating mom or the motherly woman in your life on Mother’s Day. Whether it’s scheduling a family Zoom session with your siblings to sing her praises or taking a virtual tour of your favorite museum together, innovative tech options will help you share a memorable moment.

Despite the circumstances and shelter-in-place restrictions, you can stay in touch and show the woman who taught you everything how much you care. Don’t believe us? Keep scrolling to learn how you can still show up and show out this Sunday.

  1. Schedule a Zoom

Zoom is the new gathering place for birthday parties, book club meetings, happy hours and more, so why not make it the hot spot for Mother’s Day too? Whether you’re an only child or have a number of siblings, the video conferencing platform is the perfect way to spend quality time with the woman who raised you. Surprise her and change your virtual background to heartwarming photos of the two of you together or upload solo shots of the queen by herself for a personal touch.

If she’s a wine enthusiast, elevate the video meeting by bringing the vineyard to her with a virtual tasting. There are many options available, but we prefer Ken Wright Sellers where you can purchase a tasting, schedule a Zoom session and get expert tips from an experienced sommelier.

If neither of you are into frills, spending a little quality time catching up with your mama via video is a simple solution. It really is all you need during these challenging times.

  2. Tap That App

While taking your mom to a fancy brunch may be off limits this year, you can bring fine dining to her doorstep. Simply use your go-to food delivery app to order a delicious meal from a local restaurant and have it delivered directly to her home. If she’s an early riser, opt for a luxe breakfast-in-bed menu. Enjoy the moment together and order your own breakfast so you can break bread with her over video chat. It may not be a lavish, face-to-face dining experience or a hearty, home-cooked meal at Big Mama’s, but it’s the next best thing.

Afterward, deliver delight to her inbox with an e-gift card to her favorite eatery or retail store so she can treat herself to a delicious meal or special gift of her choice.

  3. Share Digital, Go Print

Who doesn’t enjoy looking at photos? We know we do and your mom probably does too. Create a virtual gallery featuring shots of the two of you and the rest of your fam over the years. Pull up the memories and share them on your screen while chatting over video for a nostalgic afternoon. Reminiscing over treasured memories will surely tug at your mother’s heartstrings.

Then after the conference, send her a hardcover photo book of the slideshow that she can cherish for years to come.

  4. Take a virtual museum tour

Remember that time your mom took you to your first museum trip? Now’s your chance to repay the favor and take her on what’s likely to be her first virtual visit.

Ask if she has a favorite exhibit or if there’s a place that she has always wanted to explore. Search the web and find a museum that offers virtual tours. We highly recommend the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, which provides enriching virtual exhibitions or the Louvre Museum  where the two of you can travel all the way in France for free. We promise both are experiences that you’ll both enjoy!

  5. Movin' And Groovin'

If your mom has a favorite music streaming service, send her a curated list of songs that will get her grooving this Sunday. But, if playlists are not her jam, have her log on to IG for a family-friendly dance fest set to the tunes of DJ D-Nice at Club Quarantine.

Not into the virtual club scene? No problem. Be sure to have her cue up Babyface’s special Mother’s Day IG Live session (5pm PST/8pm EST), because who doesn’t love a little Babyface? The legendary singer/songwriter/producer will play music and share exclusive stories about working on the classic “Waiting to Exhale” soundtrack.

Whatever it takes to get her grooving and moving with you by phone or video, the goal is to make the experience special and create lasting memories. Music has a way of transporting you to special places without you ever having to leave your living room. That’s why it’s the perfect way to “hug” your mom when you can’t IRL.

  6. Karla Pope is a longtime writer, editor and lifestyle blogger who enjoys exploring New York City with her two young children. When she’s not visiting the many cultural attractions the city has to offer, she’s relaxing at home with her husband.
