Tracy Morgan’s Viral Confrontation With an Unhoused Man Sparks Debate
Tracy Morgan may forgive, but he won’t forget.
The comedian and actor became the topic of online chatter after a video circulated showing him confronting a man who identified as unhoused. The clip, which went viral on social media, showed Morgan responding angrily to the man — who, according to various reports, is someone Morgan appeared to know and who has allegedly bullied or harassed him in the past.
The exchange received a mix of reactions online: some viewers defended Morgan for checking what they called repeated bad behavior, while others urged compassion for people experiencing homelessness.
“I remember you, William,” Morgan is heard saying to the man in the video. “Don’t talk to me like I owe you something.”
The man is then heard asking Morgan for “something.” Morgan responded, “No! You used to talk all that sh*t to me when we were younger. You think I forgot?"
The man said, “I’m homeless boy!”
As Morgan signed autographs and snapped photos with his fans, he responded, “So what that got to do with me? I ain’t do that!”
The footage that circulated does not capture the entire history between the two men, and Morgan’s response suggests the encounter stems from a longer, contentious relationship rather than the single recorded moment.
Morgan has been in the public eye for decades and has sometimes used blunt language and on-camera toughness as part of his persona. In 2014, Morgan was involved in a deadly crash with a Walmart truck that claimed the life of his friend and fellow comedian Jimmy McNair. The crash left Morgan with broken bones in the face, a femur fracture, and brain trauma after being in a coma for two weeks. Morgan reportedly received millions of dollars in an undisclosed out-of-court settlement with Walmart, but said he would give it all back to have his friend McNair back. “I’d give it all back, if I could get him back. But that’s not gonna happen, so I gotta live on,” Morgan said.
However, a year after the tragic accident, McNair’s son, Jamel “Jshyne” McNair said, “Tracy Morgan ain’t s**t,” on his Facebook page following Morgan’s appearance at the Emmys. “People don’t even know the half, this public figure that they have so much sympathy for and they know nothing about is put on a pedestal because he’s a d*** celebrity. Being a celebrity doesn’t excuse you from human obligations.”
According to a New York Daily News report, the McNair family hadn’t heard from Morgan (at that point) since the fatal accident. “I understand it’s been a great ordeal for Tracy over the last 15 months,” McNair’s sister Pamela told the newspaper. “I just feel in some form or fashion, he should have acknowledged my brother — his mentor — because he lost his life.”
“If I had a friend who died in an accident with me in the car … My best friend’s children would be the first ones I reach out to when they died,” Jamel wrote in his Facebook post. “You take the Emmy stage and give a speech and tell jokes in front of thousands of people. But you don’t show up to celebrate the life of your best friend.”
Morgan has said in previous interviews that he watched McNair’s funeral on YouTube, and when he was on “The Today Show” in June of 2015, he spoke of McNair, saying: “The loss of my friend will never heal.”
