Lake Charles Police Video Sparks Outrage Over Wheelchair Arrest

Footage shows escalating tensions in a Lake Charles lot turning brutal as cops drag Tyler Laday from his chair, for "disturbing the peace."

A viral video showing Lake Charles, La., police officers dragging a Black man from his wheelchair and cuffing him on the ground has ignited public fury and questions about excessive force.

According to 7News, the early Monday morning incident on December 1 involved 22-year-old Tyler Laday. In the viral footage, Police arrived at the scene after receiving a call that Laday and his friends were being loud and disruptive in a parking lot around 1 a.m.

Officers warned the group multiple times to leave, but tensions escalated when one grabbed Laday's wheelchair as he rolled away, prompting arguments and bystanders filming. Video captures officers pulling Laday from the chair near their cruiser, forcing him to the pavement.

“He was like, ‘Put your hands behind your back.’ How do you expect me to put my hands behind my back? I’m in a wheelchair,” Laday said to 7News. “I said, ‘Put my cuffs in my front.’ I say, ‘No, I’m not putting my hands behind my back.’ So when I said that, he grabbed me, threw me on the ground, twisted me up, put my hands behind my back, and put me in cuffs.”

He continued, “Even if I did something wrong, y’all didn’t have to handle the situation like that. Y’all could’ve handled it differently,” Laday said. “It’s not like I can just jump off. How can I resist y’all? I’m in a wheelchair, I’m not going nowhere, y’all didn’t have to do it like that.”

Laday was charged with disturbing the peace, trespassing, resisting arrest with force or violence, and battery on an officer.

Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell stated officers used standard procedures regardless of mobility, noting the arrest didn't "look pretty" but followed protocol after warnings.

Laday countered that agents could have handled it differently, requesting front cuffs due to his disability, and plans to file a complaint. So far, no internal probe has been launched.
