2022 NAACP Image Awards: Meet the Marvelous Women Nominated for ‘Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture’
On Saturday, February 26, 2022, the NAACP Image Awards will honor outstanding performances in film, television, theatre, music, and literature. Before we can celebrate a night of Black excellence, check out the leading ladies up for the “Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture” award at the 53rd annual ceremony hosted by Anthony Anderson.
Andra Day - The United States vs. Billie Holiday
The singer-songwriter turned actress gave a captivating performance in her acting debut as jazz pioneer Billie Holiday in the Lee Daniel’s directed drama The United States vs. Billie Holiday. The 37-year-old’s acting earned her a Golden Globe Award for “Best Actress in a Motion Picture–Drama.”
Halle Berry - Bruised
Halle Berry is on double duty as both star and director in the Netflix film about disgraced MMA fighter Jackie Justice looking to regain her status in the fighting world when the son she left years ago shows resurfaces. Now Justice must take back control of her life not only for herself but now for her family.
Jennifer Hudson - Respect
Hudson’s Oscar-winning performance in the 2007 film Dreamgirls inspired legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin to ask her to portray her in the biopic Respect. Hudson is up for two of the most significant awards at the 53rd annual ceremony, “Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture” and “Entertainer of Year.”

Tessa Thompson - Passing
Thompson is captivating in the black and white film adaptation of the 1929 novel of the same name. The actress portrays Irene Redfield, whose outlook on a childhood friend Clare Kendry’s decision to embrace passing for a white woman entirely forces her to look at her own double life.
Zendaya - Malcolm & Marie
Zendaya completely shed the mold of her former Disney days with her performance in the black and white romance drama. Her role as Marie, the muse and girlfriend of a rising filmmaker, played by John David Washington, earned her a nomination, including “Best Actress” at the Bet Awards.
