Tyler Lepley on Modern Dating and the Timeless Lessons in ‘Ruth & Boaz’
Tyler Lepley joined Keke Palmer on her podcast “Baby, This is Keke Palmer” to talk about his upcoming Netflix film “Ruth & Boaz” and share his take on modern dating. The actor, who stars opposite Serayah in the project, explained that the film offered a fresh lens on a story that has roots in the Bible. In the biblical story Ruth, a widow, chooses loyalty and faithfulness over convenience, ultimately drawing the attention of Boaz, a wealthy and respected Israelite landowner. Their story, found in the Book of Ruth, is often celebrated for its themes of devotion, providence, and love that unfolds in its own time.
“I was just really excited about us being able to tell our version of this. Because as you mentioned, it’s an older story that originated in the Bible,” Lepley said.
He went on to reflect on how dating today can feel transactional, especially in a world dominated by social media and curated lifestyles.
“I can’t look at you if you don’t pull up with stars in the roof. It’s just like, what’s going on?” he asked.
Lepley noted that many people feel they need to “level all the way up to be ready,” whether through accomplishments, looks, or status. But the story of Ruth and Boaz reminds us that love often meets people where they are, and that faith and patience play a role in guiding meaningful connections. “Love can meet you right where you’re at. God is always working,” he added.
Produced by Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin under their multi-year deal with Netflix to create faith-based films, ‘Ruth & Boaz’ is directed by Alanna Brown and written by Michael Elliot and Cory Tynan. Phylicia Rashad narrates the trailer, which teases a story filled with truth, trust, and tragedy, grounding the narrative in both faith and contemporary love challenges. “Ruth & Boaz” will premiere on Netflix September 26, offering audiences a chance to see a beloved biblical story retold for today’s world.
