Ms. Shirley, “Angel” of Skid Row, Found Dead at 58

The Long Beach activist who fed thousands and flipped homelessness narratives leaves an epic legacy via Beauty 2 The Streetz.

Shirley Raines, the force behind Beauty 2 The Streetz, has passed away at 58, leaving a massive void in LA's Skid Row and beyond. The organization shared the news on Instagram on Wednesday, Jan. 28. A cause of death has not been shared.

Known to millions on TikTok and Instagram as “Ms. Shirley,” the Long Beach mother of six turned her pain into action and inspiration, handing out food, hygiene kits, makeup makeovers, and hope to the unhoused.

Raines was a Compton native who managed to overcome the loss of a child and many other hardships — it’s a story she never shied away from sharing.

"I'm a woman who actually lived this life in the streets, buried a child, went through traumatic relationships, was almost homeless myself, picked myself up, been working in the medical field for 26 years. I'm still very much ghetto, but I survived that," Raines said to ABC. "I'm able to say, 'I get it. I understand. But you've got to just get through it.'"

Working full-time in medical billing, she'd cook for 400-600 people in her one-bedroom apartment, showing up Saturdays rain or shine, handing meals out to those in need.

"Just because they're without a home doesn't mean they're without love," she told People back in 2020, flipping the script on homelessness by offering free makeup and beauty services.

Her nonprofit's pages rack up millions of followers, with viral clips showing Raines pulling up curbside in her car, plates piled high, reminding everyone on the streets that they're seen, valued, and not defined by being unhoused.

During the pandemic, she also handed out free sanitizer and masks when LA's COVID-19 cases exploded.

“Ms. Shirley dedicated her life to serving others and made an immeasurable impact on homeless communities throughout Los Angeles and Nevada,” the statement said. “Through her tireless advocacy, deep compassion, and unwavering commitment, she used her powerful media platform to amplify the voices of those in need and to bring dignity, resources, and hope to some of the most underserved populations.”

Her twin sister, Sheila, reportedly shared with TMZ, that Raines was found unresponsive next to her bed during a wellness check; an autopsy is pending. In 2021, Raines snagged CNN's 2021 Hero of the Year and was awarded the NAACP's 2025 Social Media Personality award.

“Her legacy will continue to live on through the work she started and the hearts she touched. We humbly ask that you keep Ms. Shirley’s family, loved ones, and the Beauty 2 The Streetz family in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement continued.

Ms. Shirley was 58.
