Ray J Opens Up About Struggles With Family Acceptance and Relationship With Brandy
Ray J is opening up about his complicated relationship with his sister, Brandy.
The “Raydiation" singer recently appeared on the “Drop The Lo" podcast, hosted by “Basketball Wives" star Evelyn Lozada and her daughter, Shaniece Hairston.
In a clip from the episode, Lozada asks the former “Love & Hip Hop” star about his relationship with Brandy, prompting a surprisingly vulnerable response.
“I love my sister, but I’m an embarrassment to them,” he began. “I think we’re good and we’ll be okay. There’s certain things I feel we should do as a family that her and my cousin might not agree upon but, to each his own.”
Despite the tension, Ray J shared that his children still have a strong bond with their famous aunt.
“Epic calls his auntie every day. He loves his auntie,” he expressed.
“We’ve been able to connect through him when they’re on FaceTime. We say what’s up, but other than that, we haven’t talked.”
He also touched on the disconnect he feels with his cousin, suggesting they don’t fully accept him for who he is. Still, he insists he’s “superseding” expectations.
“My cousin may not want me to be me, but I’m superseding them,” he said.
Lozada stepped in with support, telling Ray J that people love how different he is from his sister.
“I think that’s what people love about you. You’re funny and outspoken,” she said.
The 44-year-old went on to reveal that it’s only family criticism that truly affects him.
“You only feel bad when your family has a problem. Your family is the only people that can get to you,” he said.
“Not the comments or the people on the other side. When your mom, sister, cousin, or your dad start to question the algorithm, it’s not fair because they don’t understand what’s happening in the digital world.”
