Bobby Brown Says Britney Spears ‘Butchered’ His Hit Song ‘My Prerogative’
Bobby Brown is setting the record straight about how he really felt about Britney Spears’ rendition of his iconic 1988 anthem “My Prerogative,” and he isn’t holding back.
During a recent appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, the New Edition legend didn’t mince words when asked about artists sampling or covering his music.
“I don’t think they did it justice,” Brown began, adding, “I don’t think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs.”
The 56-year-old star then pointed to Britney Spears’ take on “My Prerogative,” claiming he was less than pleased with the 2004 effort from the singer’s “Greatest Hits: My Prerogative” album.

Brown said, “Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that I couldn’t take it, noting that he “cleared it only because it was Britney Spears and I was thinking… Teddy Riley is doing it too, so you know.”
Spears’ version of “My Prerogative” took a glossier, synth-heavy approach to the original, reworking the lyrics to reflect a female perspective and opening with a now-infamous spoken word intro about truth and ownership.
Brown admitted the experience taught him a significant lesson about music licensing. “I gotta hear it [in order for it to be cleared] because you don’t know what these kids will say these days,” he said. “These kids say some shit that… you don’t want your song associated with it.”
Though Spears’ version introduced a new generation to the track during a pivotal moment in her career, it’s clear Brown wasn’t a fan of the remake—or the message behind it.
