N.Y. Urban League Honors BET COO and President Scott Mills

The New York Urban League recognized BET Networks President and COO Scott Mills Monday with its Frederick Douglass Award at the organization’s 45th Annual Awards Dinner.

The black-tie gala honors leaders who work and charity help to eliminate racial barriers and promote opportunities for the disadvantaged. The award is given to business leaders like Mills, who was singled out for his outstanding track record; using his position at BET to improve the overall state of affairs in the African-American community.

Mills, who has been in his role at BET for over 10 years, is responsible for several important pro-social initiatives.

Under the umbrella of the BET Foundation, Mills has helped serve the community with campaigns such as Rap It Up, which promotes awareness around HIV/Aids; The Black College Tour and Get Schooled, which address education issues; the Women's Health Symposium which targets obesity and promotes healthy living. The BET foundation also sponsors the BET Summer Camp for Girls, a residential camp program for African-American girls, ages 10-12 that raises awareness about childhood obesity and teaches girls about nutrition, fitness, positive thinking and self-responsibility.
