Jennifer Lopez Deems Her Halftime Show Criticism 'Silliness’

One particular critic has reportedly considered legal action against the NFL for the performance.

For the first-time ever, Latin music icons Jennifer Lopez and Shakira joined onstage as co-headliners of the 2020 Super Bowl halftime experience. The ladies powered through a high-energy performance full of displays that proudly paid homage to their Latin heritage.

At one point during the night, J. Lo even channeled her Hustlers persona with a pole performance. In one of the show’s more symbolic moments, children were shown detained in cages alluding to the deep-seated immigration controversies that have blemished the current presidential administration. While their stage mostly drew praise from viewers who tuned in, there were still a chorus of critics who felt that the show was too provocative.

  • Christian minister Dave Daubenmire was one of them, stating that he was considering taking legal action against the NFL over the halftime show, as previously reported on by the New York Post.

At the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (Feb. 8) where she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Hustlers, J. Lo spoke to Variety where she gave her thoughts on the criticism.

  • “I think that’s honestly silliness,” she told the publication. “Both of us are really respectful performers who are moms and have kids and are very conscious of what we do. We [put on] a show that I believe was a celebration of women and our Latino culture that I think was really well-reserved. And that small faction of people who want to be negative about it, I can’t even let in.”

“So many beautiful things came out of it and the message of standing up for yourself, being a woman (sic) – that’s what I want to pass on to little girls – that’s what we want to say, you’re strong, you’re beautiful, everything about you, be proud of it,” she continued. “I’m very proud of the performance that night.”
