Trump Slammed For Rescinding Mandate Requiring Coverage Of Free Contraceptives

Here’s why #HandsOffMyBirthControl is trending.

Donald Trump is no stranger to criticism, yet the Friday announcement that his administration is rolling back an Obama-era policy mandating employers cover birth control for women was met with unparalleled backlash.

President Trump promised during his campaign that he would allow employers to have "religious liberty," meaning they would not be forced to provide health insurance that covers oral contraceptives if it went against their religious beliefs. Attorney General Jeff Sessions released a statement on Friday wherein he echoed that promise.

“President Trump promised that this administration would ‘lead by example on religious liberty,’ and he is delivering on that promise,” Sessions said in a statement, as reported by the New York Times.

Under the Affordable Care Act, 55 million women were given access to free birth control. As a result of Trump's policy change, hundreds of thousands of women could lose access to their birth control.

  • After the announcement, Trump was blasted by politicians, celebrities, single women, men who support women's rights, etc.

  • Eventually, the hashtag #handsoffmybirthcontrol was a top trend

  • Several organizations have already vowed to file lawsuits
