5 Daniel Kaluuya Performances That Show His Versatility
There’s a reason that British actor Daniel Kaluuya is an Academy Award winner. Having gotten a major push on mid-aughts UK teen dramedy “Skins,” it was by the 2010s that Kaluuya became a crossover phenom, leading Jordan Peele’s psych-horror directorial debut “Get Out.” The Oscar-winning film put Kaluuya on Hollywood’s map, and he hasn’t looked back, showing his chops in blockbusters like “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Nop,e” and more.
In praise of Kaluuya, who celebrates his 36th birthday on February 24, we look back at five movies where the actor showed his range.
“Get Out”
While visiting upstate New York to meet his white girlfriend’s parents, the unsuspecting Chris, played by Kaluuya, gets caught in a madhouse of psychological terror under the control of the racist and deceptive family. Due to its timely and unique storyline, the film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2018.
“Queen & Slim”
A first date gone wrong takes Slim (Kaluuya) and Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) underground and to a devastating end after they flee the accidental murder of a cop.
“Judas and the Black Messiah”
Kaluuya gave a gripping portrayal of the late Black Panther Party Chicago chairman Fred Hampton in the 2021 historical drama “Judas and the Black Messiah,” winning him Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Academy Awards.
“Nope”
Kaluuya was a man of few words in “Nope” as OJ., brother of Emerald (Keke Palmer) in Peele’s 2022 sci-fi thriller “Nope.” With some assistance, the siblings chased a dangerous UFO, Jean Jacket, to prove its existence.
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”
While brief, Kaluuya was a fan-favorite in 2023’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” as Hobie Brown, a charming and British punk rock version of the Marvel superhero.
