Memphis is honoring one of its own after presenting Grammy Award-winning rapper

Drake—who has ties to the city by way of family—with the “key to Shelby County.”

The “Rich Flex” emcee was recognized by local officials from Memphis and Shelby County during a visit to the city on Monday, June 26. The rap star was later spotted at the famed Railgarden in Midtown, according to an Instagram Stories he shared.

Mickell Lowery, chairman of the Shelby County Commission, presented Drake with the “key,” before sharing some kind remarks about the veteran hip-hop figure.

“In Memphis you know, we love our own. Drake, we always say Memphis music touches the world, and like I told you, you’ve got a lot of Memphis blood in you, and you’re definitely touching the world,” Lowery told the “Knife Talk” rapper.  “We appreciate the music, we appreciate you putting Memphis all in your music, on the map.”

Drake’s father, Dennis Graham, is a Memphis native whose family has connections to several prominent musical figures. The entertainer spent time in the Memphis area with his father during childhood and even named-dropped the local Shelby area in his music.
